Dear [Representative Name],
I am writing as a constituent to urge you to support reforms that address the immigration asylum backlog crisis.
Currently, over 3.6 million cases are pending, with wait times of 4-7 years. With only ~700 Immigration Judges nationwide, the system is fundamentally overwhelmed.
The main problem for the backlog, is that refugee asylum seekers have only one way to immigrate, within the current system. It is the single, most rational choice available to them… risk crossing the border and claim asylum. The choice is wrong. The system is broken, but the current backlog must be adjudicated.
I support the following recommendations:
1. Appoint and train Para-Lawyers Judges to address low-priority cases, to use their discretion to administratively close or terminate asylum cases (and to address cases elsewhere, where appropriate).
2. Expedite Processing: This surge in personnel will allow for a dramatic increase in processed cases, clearing the backlog and providing clarity to those in limbo.
3. The new H. R. 1, One Big Beautiful Bill passed by Congress, has placed a cap of a maximum of 800 Immigration Asylum Judges. It is effective November 1, 2028 and that clause must be repealed.
This is a practical solution that both sides can agree on. Please consider supporting this initiative.
Thank you for your service.
Respectfully,
[Your Name]
